Frequently Asked Questions

Who was Lancelot Sturgeon?

Perhaps a better question would be: who wasn’t Lancelot Sturgeon? Nineteenth-century gourmet, holder of strong opinions about mustard, user of five-dollar words and author of Essays Moral, Philosophical and Stomachical (which, for the record, is still in print), he is a role model for our times who has, rather shamefully, fallen out of the public discourse. We think it is fair to say that he was a funny man (based on his choice of pseudonym, which pairs a British knight of old with an oily fish), a renowned eater and bon vivant, and a man who accomplished more for “the important science of good-living” before breakfast than most of us do in a week. In short, he makes Gandhi look like a child pornographer, and our role is to embody his ideals and bring his name back to glory.

Can you share some of his wisdom with us?

With pleasure.

“A stomach which is proof against all trials is the greatest of all blessings.” – Lancelot Sturgeon

“[The worst offense] is to interrupt a man in the exercise of his jaws.” – Lancelot Sturgeon

“Sedulously shun the perilous distinction of being seated next to the mistress of the house, unless you choose to incur the risk of being forced to waste your most precious moments in carving for others instead of for yourself. Never could it be more truly said than on such an occasion, that the ‘post of honour is a “place of danger.”‘” – Lancelot Sturgeon

Google suggests that his name should actually be spelled “Launcelot.” You know, with a u.

Would you have found this site if we spelled it like that?

With the preponderance of food blogs out there, why did you start this site? Are you just looking to get invited to food blogger happy hours?

The topic of food consumes roughly 70-80% of the conversations that we have with each other, regardless of who else is around.  By establishing ourselves as a modern-day eating society, we hope to have that conversation in a more structured and productive way, as well as moving on to more socially acceptable and accessible topics for party chatter.

What constitutes “good-living”?

Tune in and see for yourself. Hint: it involves a lot of divey ethnic restaurants.
